More About This Project
Background: Located on the edge of Big Woods State Park, Valley Grove is a picturesque setting of two historic churches facing each other at the top of a hill overlooking prairie and oak savannah. The first church, built of stone, was constructed in 1862. By 1894, the congregation had outgrown this structure and built a new wood-frame church on the same property, retaining the original church as a guild hall.
Projects: The congregation disbanded in 1973, but the buildings have been well-maintained by the Valley Grove Preservation Society (VGPS). As part this ongoing stewardship, VGPS hired MacDonald & Mack to undertake a Historic Structures Report of the site, including a conditions assessment and developmental history of both buildings. The project was funded by a Legacy Grant.
